About the FOSS Programme Office

SITA’s Free Open Source Software Programme Office was established in September 2007.

Its main objectives are to monitor, advise and provide guidance on the appropriate FOSS usage for government.

Its mission is to ensure the implementation of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) in government. The FPO provides thought leadership and guidance for Government FOSS migration.

The five strategic objectives of SITA’s FPO are to:

  •   Demonstrate FOSS: Show that FOSS works in live business environments.
  •   Enable FOSS: Clear the road (make the bumpy smooth) for implementations.
This includes all capacity building required, guidelines and procurement policy amendments.
  •   Promote FOSS: Engage with stakeholders in such a way that they become participators versus spectators.
  •   Build the FOSS Ecosystem: Engage, activate or create the elements that produce the capacity needed for enabling
      FOSS.
  •   Understand FOSS: Understand the actual and potential usage/adoption of FOSS in our Government.
This understanding also acts as a measuring  tool for progress.
