Not only that. Those public servants themselves who wrote the documents need to be able to read and possibly update them again in future, even after the companies that give us our text processing software have vanished, and the details of how those programs work have disappeared with them. Technologies change every day and by adopting open standards such as the Open Document Format (ODF), government will be able to access its information and records across various platforms and applications for many decades.For this reason the world-wide celebration of Document Freedom Day on 31 March is significant. read more
The e-Document Work Group from the Presidential Commission has in the past been responsible for spearheading the adoption of open standards in the country. In 2008 the PNC hosted the XML Standards in Government workshop in order to equip government with tools for service delivery through open access. Other international organisations like the ODF Alliance www.odfalliance.org are prominent in the celebration of Document Freedom Day. In 2008, there was an international ODF Alliance Workshop which took place at the Department of Science and Technology. read more
