• GIS Pilot
  
  The FOSS Programme Office investigates web-based GIS applications. So far, five interns have been trained in the installation of the open source software. Training is complete, and the interns will be taken to the selected government departments where pilots will be conducted.
  
  The interns have studied and familarised themselves with the pilot requirements. The next phase is to customise the requirements to meet the needs of stakeholders. Then, the interns will install software at the pilot site and help to operationalise it.

• Documents on the Cloud
  
  A concept document that explains how the templates needed for standard reports can be made accessible on a cloud as has been completed. The President of South Africa, in a recent speech, declared that the burden of municipal reporting is an issue. The FPO with other SITA units is looking to provide alternatives to address this issue and to improve current reporting systems. An alternate approach to the current municipal reporting will be investigated.
   
  The Department of Arts and Culture is currently working with the FPO to create Googledocs templates to enable cloud reporting systems. Their associated institutions, like the museums, National Library of South Africa, fill in the information over the Internet. Private clouds will later be created to handle this reporting.  [more...]
